He built one of the most respected and consistently successful NCAA Division III football programs in the nation.

Girardi's career record at Lycoming is 257-97-5 and he ranks 15th on the NCAA all-time winningest coaches list, tied with legendary Brigham Young coach LaVell Edwards. In 2005, Girardi became only the 17th coach at any NCAA level to reach the 250-win plateau.

Warrior teams coached by Girardi have won 13 NCAA Division III playoff games, 13 Middle Atlantic Conference championships and made 11 appearances in the NCAA playoffs, including trips to the Stagg Bowl- the Division III national championship game- in 1990 and 1997. Lycoming has tallied a winning record in 29 of Girardi's 36 seasons as head coach.

His accomplishments and consistency have not gone unnoticed by others. Girardi is a member of three halls of fame, including the West Branch Valley Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania State Sports Hall of Fame, and West Chester University's W. Glenn Killinger Football Hall of Fame. The Middle Atlantic Conference has honored Girardi as their Coach of the Year on 12 occasions, and in 1999 he became the Robert W. Maxwell Football Club’s first recipient of their Tri-State Coach of the Year Award. The award is presented to an outstanding college or high school coach from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Delaware.

Girardi began his love affair with football in high school when he carried the ball as a running back for the Williamsport Millionaires. He continued to play at the collegiate level at West Chester University.

Girardi entered the coaching ranks in 1961 when he became an assistant at Jersey Shore High School. He became head coach of the team in 1963 and remained in that position for six years.

In 1969, Girardi became an assistant at Lycoming under Budd Whitehill. Three years later, he took the reigns as head coach of a Warrior program that had gone 14-34 since their last winning season in 1965. Lycoming’s woes continued during Girardi’s first three seasons with marks of 2-6, 2-6 and 3-6. But in his fourth season, the Warriors recorded a mark of 6-2 and ran off 29 consecutive winning campaigns.

In 1984, Girardi accepted an expanded role in the College’s athletic department as the Director of Athletics. He continues to serve in that capacity today, overseeing Lycoming’s 17 intercollegiate athletic programs.

Girardi resides in Williamsport with his wife Lynne. Their four children – Cathi, Jerry, Frank Jr. and Justine – have all graduated from Lycoming College.

Girardi Honored For Lifetime Achievement

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Former Lycoming College head football coach Frank Girardi was honored on Sunday night with a lifetime achievement award, presented by ESPN Radio 1050 at the inaugural Night of Champions. After receiving the award, it was announced that in years to come, the honor will be titled the Frank Girardi Lifetime Achievement Award.

Girardi, who was scheduled to be a guest speaker at the inaugural event hosted at the Holiday Inn Grand Ballroom, was surprised when an audio clip featuring former players from as far back as the 1970’s began playing. Players spoke about how Girardi helped to shape their lives, both on and off the field.

Next, Girardi’s four children made their way to the stage to honor him with the ESPN 1050 Lifetime Achievement Award, a fitting tribute on Fathers Day.

“I wondered why they were all here,” joked Girardi when he took the microphone. “I have been to countless events and games and it seemed odd that they would all come to this one.”
Following the presentation of the award, ESPN 1050 Sports Director Todd Bartley took the microphone for a special announcement.

“We felt that simply honoring him with this award was not enough,” said Bartley. “Therefore, in years to come, this award will be known as the Frank Girardi Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Girardi took the microphone and delivered one of the inspirational speeches he has become known for over his outstanding tenure at Lycoming. He spoke to the room, filled with the top high school talent in the county, about making good decisions throughout life and about staying on track for success.

The ESPN Radio Night of Champions event was held for the first time on Sunday evening. The night included a catered meal, messages from NFL and WNBA players, inspirational messages from Girardi and Bucknell head football coach Tim Landis and the presentation of numerous awards. Money was raised through a silent auction, a 50-50 raffle and a generous donation from M&T Bank, for the ESPN 1050 Scholarship fund, which will be granted to a graduating high school senior athlete from the area.

Bartley hopes that with the support of the community, the event will become an annual gathering to honor the accomplishments of the athletes in Lycoming County.

Girardi Gala Photos - A Celebration of Loyality

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5203174876142683650" style="DISPLAY: block; I wish it could have been different but I guess it is a case of bad timing.

It was back in March that a parcel came to us. In opening it we were told we were being invited to a Girardi Gala that would be held in the Pickelner Arena in Williamsport on the evening of Saturday, May 17, 2008.

The banner told us that the Girardi Family and Friends were in charge of what was to be a celebration of a football era at Lycoming College that, I would bet, will never be duplicated. This celebration was to center on Frank Girardi, Sr and his long time associate Robb Curry as both men were announcing their retirements from the College after being together, in success, for 36 years..

It only took us few minutes to agree that we would do all we could to make "The Gala". As it turns out we are going to have to leave four great friends doing our Second Annual Old Folks Weekend Away up in Eagles Mere so we can share the night with the assembled G-Folks.
I guess we should have entitled this - I Sat With Frank - Number 2. Not too may days ago we stopped over to the Athletics Building and found Frank "stripped". We have been going into his office for several years and it was always so warm and so filled with the photos and artifacts that spanned his 36 years as the College athletic director and his time as head football coach. This time it was just about empty. No pictures, none of the wall plaques but a set of commemorative footballs marking the steps and next steps along the Girardi Way.

"I guess there has been a move since the last time I was in here."

"Yes, I was over campus and made it official. Turned it (retirement notice) in. It was time to get that out of the way. Robb turned his in some time ago so we, with the exception of some leftover AD stuff, are finished at Lycoming.

Across the way was the office that had been occupied by Curry through this era. His office was also covered by Lycoming stuff. The walls were covered by the official colored pictures of every one of the teams who had formed the amazing 29 years of consecutive winning seasons. He also had recruit letters on his desk, a box of Lycoming football caps or a box of some other product that carried the Warrior logo. I took a sneak peak and that office had also been changed.
Keep in mind that Frank (Can I please use first names?) was the AD and the Coach. Robb was the associate AD plus the chief recruiter. He was, as I saw him, the planner and organizer of a lot of what was going on or what was going on later.

Add in Steve Wiser. The Bald Eagle Area ( Wingate, Pa) star who came to Lycoming to play football and wrestle for Budd Whitehill. Frank was assisting Budd so coached Steve as a player. When Frank became head coach he added Steve to his staff and the three men, along with a cast of hundreds wrote the Warriors name into the never to be forgotten history of NCAA D-3 football as Lycoming went national.

Many of that cast were coming in for the Girardi Gala Saturday. Over 500 of those invited had sent word to Lynn Girardi who told us, "Most of them are coming by themselves. Just think if they were bringing their wives. We don't know if the Arena could hold them."

It has been a crazy quilt story at the College since the end of the 2007 football season. The retirement as football coach by Frank Girardi. The choosing of Mike Clark as the incoming coach. The retirement of Robb Curry as Associate Athletic Director and Chief Recruiter. The resignation of Steve Wiser as an Assistant Head Football coach and defensive coordinator The resignations of most of the Girardi coaching staff. The return of Steve Wiser. The building of a new Clark coaching staff. The resignation of Frank Girardi as athletic director. The naming of Scott Kennell as the new athletic director. The resignation of Paul Cotton Mayer as sports information director. The resignation of Don Friday as head basketball coach and there will be the naming of the new Sports Information Director very soon.

I will bet that all of the above will not become a major talk topic at the Gala. The topic will be, "When I played........

Tell you what. I am already excited about the night ahead. There will be emotion to be sure but the celebration theme will come alive.

- Thats 30 -

Coach Girardi - Set One

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166630134035670450" style="FLOAT: left; college football coaches, has announced his retirement as Lycoming College’s head football coach. During his 36 seasons as the Warriors’ head coach, Girardi compiled a career record of 257-97-4, which ranks 15th on the NCAA’s all-time winningest coaches list, regardless of division.

Girardi ranked fifth in wins among active NCAA coaches and second among active NCAA Division III coaches. He led Lycoming to 13 Middle Atlantic Conference championships and 11 appearances in the NCAA playoffs, including trips to the Stagg Bowl—the NCAA Division III national championship game—in 1990 and 1997. In all, the Warriors have tallied a winning record in 29 of Girardi’s 36 seasons.

"It wasn't a question of whether I could do it anymore, but whether I could do it to the highest level I set for myself," said Girardi of his decision. "If not, I wouldn't be true to myself or the program. That's when I made the decision to retire."

Perhaps Girardi’s finest coaching moment came in the final game of the 2005 season when he became only the 17th coach in NCAA history to reach the milestone of 250 victories. The 17-10 overtime victory against longtime rival Susquehanna University capped an exciting campaign in which the Warriors rallied from a 1-4 start to finish with a five-game winning streak and a 6-4 record.

"Coach G, as most of his players call him, is a legendary figure,” said Lycoming President Dr. James E. Douthat. “He has etched a nationally-respected, winning tradition in the town where he was raised. In the world of NCAA Division III football, the name Frank Girardi is synonymous with class and success, both on and off of the football field.”

Girardi is a member of the West Branch Valley Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania State Sports Hall of Fame and West Chester University’s W. Glenn Killinger Football Hall of Fame. The Middle Atlantic Conference has honored Girardi as its Coach of the Year on 12 occasions. In 1999, he became the Robert W. Maxwell Football Club’s first recipient of their Tri-State Coach of the Year Award, which is presented to an outstanding college or high school coach from Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware.

Girardi began his football career in high school when he carried the ball as a running back for the Williamsport Millionaires. He continued to play at the collegiate level at West Chester University.

Girardi entered the coaching ranks in 1961 when he became an assistant coach at Jersey Shore (Pa.) High School. He became head coach of the team in 1963 and remained in that position for six years.

In 1969, Girardi became an assistant at Lycoming under Budd Whitehill. Three years later, he took over the reigns as head coach of a Warrior program that had gone 14-34 since its last winning season in 1965. During Girardi’s first three seasons, Lycoming went 2-6, 2-6 and 3-6. In his fourth season, the Warriors recorded a mark of 6-2 and went on to have 29 consecutive winning campaigns.

In 1984, Girardi accepted an expanded role as Lycoming’s director of athletics, overseeing Lycoming’s 17 intercollegiate athletic programs.

Girardi resides in Williamsport with his wife Lynne. Their four children – Cathi, Jerry, Frank, Jr. and Justine – have all graduated from Lycoming College.

Lycoming Coach Frank Girardi, By Comparison

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—It’s been said from time to time that Lycoming College’s head football coach Frank Girardi is “the Joe Paterno of Division III football.” And there are definitely similarities. Both coaches are of Italian descent, both are affable and both are intensely passionate about football. Both are situated near the top of the NCAA’s all-time victories list (Paterno is 3rd, Girardi 14th). Both have led a single program over decades to remarkable success. And both reside amid the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania, just an hour apart. Even their team uniforms nearly match, with just a yellow-gold accent distinguishing Lycoming. But, even though the comparison is surely a compliment, to pigeonhole Frank Girardi is to overlook a distinctive legacy and the uniqueness of Division III football.

In 36 years at Lycoming, Girardi has amassed a record of 257-97-5 (.726). Only thirteen college football coaches, regardless of division, have ever won more games. Among active coaches, he ranks fifth, just two places behind Paterno. Girardi has led his Warriors to 13 Middle Atlantic Conference championships and 11 NCAA Playoff appearances. In 1990 and 1997 his teams played for the Division III national championship in the Stagg Bowl. But it’s the spirit that Girardi instills in his players that transcends the football field. It’s a strength of character that his players carry into the rest of their lives.

The likelihood of Girardi’s Warriors reaching the NFL is miniscule. In the world of Division III football, “the pros” are something to watch on Sunday, not a realistic career option. In fact, many of Girardi’s players resemble their fellow students in size. Therefore, each athlete plays mainly for the love of the game and to get a solid education.

Much like Paterno, Girardi coaches his players to graduate as productive young adults. He wants them to be stalwarts of the community. Through football fundamentals, he hopes to teach his players how to prosper in life. Focus your body and mind, keep your head up, strive to be the best. Success is a derivative of hard work and dedication.

To be around “Coach G”, as most players refer to him, is to be inspired. He has a fatherly aura, combined with an indescribable energy that compels players to think, and act, like champions. Maybe that is why every four-year Lycoming player since 1975 has won at least one conference championship. And maybe that’s why former players and coaches return regularly to Williamsport to visit their mentor, who also happens to be their friend.

Current player Ryan Godec describes his first interaction with Girardi. “When I met Coach G, one of the first things he said to me was ‘I’m not worried about your size, because you play with heart.’ He was the only coach who said that to me and I liked how he recognized that. Then I saw the players interact and saw how close everyone is. There aren’t any "cliques" here. Coach teaches us to be a strong unit.”

In the final game of 2005, Girardi became one of only five active coaches to reached 250 career wins. That milestone victory came in fittingly dramatic fashion. After a 1-4 start to the season, the Warriors put together four straight victories leading up to their season-ending showdown with rival Susquehanna University. With not only history, but a winning season on the line, Lycoming took the game into overtime on a last-minute field goal. Girardi’s squad then scored on its first overtime possession and held Susquehanna on downs to preserve the milestone win.

Some longtime fans called it Girardi’s finest coaching performance. With so many illustrious campaigns to choose from, it’s hard to say. With the win, Girardi passed coaching legend Lou Holtz (249) on the all-time list. In 2007, Girardi eclipsed Division I coaching legend Tom Osbourne’s win total (255) and then tied BYU’s LaVell Edwards (257) for 14th place on the list of winningest coaches.

As legendary figures go, “Coach G” has all of the elements. He has etched out a nationally-respected, winning tradition in the town where he was raised. He has guided thousands of players into adulthood, including several of his own children and grandchildren. He is a member of three halls of fame, including the Pennsylvania State Sports Hall of Fame, and he has been named MAC Coach of the Year 12 times. In 1984, Coach Girardi also became Lycoming’s Director of Athletics. And through it all, he continues to instill passion in the hearts of hundreds of young athletes each year.

In the world of Division III football, the name Frank Girardi is synonymous with class and success both on and off of the football field. His legend stands alone, but admittedly it draws comparison to another distinguished coach, one who works just an hour down the road. Just don’t be surprised if you hear someone refer to Joe Paterno as “the Frank Girardi of Division I football.”

By Cotton Mayer - Lycoming College SID

359th Game - Lycoming Falls at Lebanon Valley

The Last Game
Annville, Pa.—Lycoming College's football team (3-7, 3-4) fell to conference foe Lebanon Valley College (4-6, 3-4) by a score of 28-14 on Saturday, November 10. It was the final game of the 2007 season for both teams.

Lebanon Valley threw a 38-yard completion on its first play from scrimmage, setting up a 14-yard touchdown run by Charlie Parker in the game's first four minutes. Parker scored four touchdowns on the day, tying a school record. All three scores were followed by Brittany Ryan extra point conversions.

Lycoming freshman Josh Dixon (Fleetville, PA) returned the ensuing kickoff 58 yards, but a personal foul call brought cut fifteen yards off of the run. Nonetheless, freshman quarterback Tim Hook (Harrisburg, PA) hit fellow frosh Ryan Wagaman (Aspers, PA) on a 20-yard completion and the Warriors appeared to be rolling.

However, from the Flying Dutchmen 15 yard line, Hook was intercepted in the end zone by Tim Ridewood, ending the Lycoming threat. Hook was 10 of 22 on the day, but threw three costly interceptions in the first half.

Lycoming went three and out on its next possession and a 19-yard punt by sophomore Brad Shellenberger (Lock Haven, PA) gave LVC the ball in Warrior territory. But the blue and gold defense was stout, as it has been all year, and a tackle-for-loss by senior defensive end Ryan Yaple (Stillwater, PA) set up a third and long for the Dutchmen. Leb Val faked the punt, but Adam Brossman's pass fluttered incomplete and Lycoming took over the ball at its own 40.

Warrior running back Mark Rosa (Honesdale, PA) put together runs of nine and 14 yards, breaking tackles along the way. But an intentional grounding by Hook, 23 yards behind the line of scrimmage, resulted in a second down and 38 and ultimately another punt just before the end of the first quarter.

Yaple recorded his 14th sack of the year to get the ball back in Lycoming's hands. Yaple came into the game ranked first the Middle Atlantic Conference and second in the nation in quarterback sacks. He is sixth on the team in tackles, mainly because offenses try to avoid him.

Unfortunately, the Warriors couldn't get it started in the second period, as Hook's first pass skipped off the hands of Jimmie Stevenson (Pipersville, PA) and into the arms of Russell DeStefano, who thieved Hook twice on the afternoon.

A facemask call on return set up Leb Val at Lycoming's 19 yard line. A short burst by LVC's Parker made the score 14-0 with 11 minutes left in the half.
On the warriors ensuing possession, Rosa gained 10 yards on a draw but fumbled. Luckily Wagaman fell on the ball, preserving a beautiful 41-yard touchdown completion to senior tight end Bill Margetich (Glenolden, PA). Margetich caught the ball in the middle third and put a sweet move on the safety to waltz into the end zone. A Scott Erickson (New Providence, NJ) extra point put the Warriors within seven points.

However, Parker answered on LVCs next possession, exploding on a 40-yard tackle-breaking touchdown scamper that set the score at 21-7 at halftime. The Dutchmen attempted a field goal just before the break, but it was tipped by Wagaman and fell unsuccessfully.

Despite the lopsided score, total offense and time of possession was nearly even for both teams at the half. But turnovers spelled the difference with the Warriors totaling four mishaps in the first two periods. Leb Val received to start the second half, but the drive stalled. Unfortunately, a Hook completion on Lycoming's next possession was fumbled by senior Ryan Dixon (Dalton, PA), setting up a Dutchmen drive which culminated with Parker in the end zone again.

Warrior running back Josh Kleinfelter (Bellwood, PA) took matters into his own hands on the next possession. The freshman ran the ball nine times, getting as far as Lebanon Valley's four yard line. The third quarter ended with Lyco threatening, but a fourth down pass into traffic fell incomplete and the Dutchmen took over on downs.

Kleinfelter gained 116 yards on the day, while Rosa racked up 49. The Warriors totaled 197 rushing yards, but suffered futility through the air. Sophomore Colin Dwyer (Dalton, PA) took over at quarterback in the fourth quarter and immediately executed a 46-yard drive that saw Margetich catch his second touchdown reception.

With the score 28-14 and 8:31 still on the clock, Lycoming had to act fast. But the Warriors run-oriented offense, could not ride the momentum to another score. At 3:17, Dwyer took Lyco near midfield from deep in its own territory, but the Warriors turned the ball over on downs and their season ended.
It was a disappointing finale for the seniors, but hope springs eternal for the many first and second year players who gained experience in 2007. Lycoming's coaching staff is given the challenge of righting the ship this offseason and filling the holes left by graduation. Stay tuned.

Photos Game 359 - Set One

The Last Game:

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166098932480500962" style="FLOAT: left; From the last tick of the game clock in November 2005 against Susquehanna, Lycoming had just a couple of days to savor Frank’s 250th win.

Then it is recruiting time for four of the coaches, campus visits, talking to the coach for both prospective player and family and finalizing plans for another season in the fall of 2006 Frank told us about that process and some other information we know you will be interested in.

Thanks for listening to podcast #61 and our second sit-down with "Coach G."

Girardi Wins 250th in Overtime Thriller

WILLIAMSPORT - Lycoming College head football coach Frank Girardi earned the 250th victory of his illustrious career as the Warriors capped the 2005 season with a 17-10 overtime victory over longtime rival Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Glenn Smith (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) scored on an 11-yard scamper during Lycoming's overtime possession to give the Warriors the lead. The defense, stout all game, made Smith's seventh touchdown run of the season stand up as they forced the Warriors on downs to secure the victory.

The triumph concluded an exciting campaign in which the Warriors dug out of a 1-4 hole to finish with a 6-4 mark and a five-game winning streak that will carry over until next season.

The victory was special for Coach Girardi in a number of ways. His family was on hand to witness the 34-year mentor become only the 17th coach in any NCAA football division and only one of five active coaches with 250 career wins. It is also fitting that this victory comes against Susquehanna. In 1972, following a 0-5 start, Coach Girardi notched his first victory in a 16-12 decision against the Crusaders.

In a season that many call one of his best coaching performances of his career, Coach Girardi made a bold move with 0:51 remaining in regulation when he called on freshman kicker Mike Monastra (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) on fourth down from the 10-yard line with the Warriors down 10-7. Monastra, having made only one field goal on the season of 19 yards, split the uprights on a 27-yard field goal like a hardened veteran to force the overtime period.
With the offense sputtering for the majority of the match, the Warrior defense responded with its most dominating performance of the season. The unit surrendered only 146 yards of total offense including a dominating push against the Crusader rushing attack in giving up only 53 yards on the ground on 41 carries. Lycoming also battered Susquehanna quarterback Dennis Robertson with a trio of sacks and three first-half interceptions.

One of those interceptions set up the opening score of the game. Defensive back Vreeland Wood (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) corralled an errant Robertson throw at midfield. Freshman tailback Jim Laky (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) took a toss around the right tackle from four yards out a few plays later for his fourth rushing score of the season and 7-0 Warrior advantage.

The Crusaders caught a break early in the second quarter when Shawn Rafferty partially blocked a Lycoming punt to give Susquehanna possession at the Warrior 29-yard line. Two plays later, Robertson hit Jim Owen in the corner of the end zone with an excellent 30-yard pass to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

Smith was sacked a pair of times on Lycoming's next drive and was Lycoming was forced to punt, but the Warriors got the ball right back as Crusader return man Ben Gibboney had the ball jarred free by senior Matt Mangold (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). Fellow senior Mike Ward (Phoenix, Md./Loyola Blakefield) collected the loose ball to give Lycoming possession at its own 38-yard line.
The Warriors converted on fourth-and-inches from the Crusader 38 on a sneak by Smith, but on fourth-and-10 from the Susquehanna 20-yard line, Lycoming eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Susquehanna added a field goal on the first drive of the second half. A 15-yard completion to Nick Macia and a pass interference penalty set up a field goal try for the Crusaders. Kicker Dwith Swaney made no mistake in converting the 26-yard attempt and giving Susquehanna a 10-7 edge.

The Warrior defense stepped its play up yet another notched with a pair of sacks by defensive end Tim Hartingh (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and linebacker Kevin LeSage (Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) on the same series of downs to pin the Crusaders at their own eight-yard line. Susquehanna averted a near disaster when the punt-snap eluded Swaneys grasp, but the left-footed kicker scrambled after the ball, collected it, and managed to boot the ball downfield. It nearly worked in his favor as the effort careened of a Lycoming lineman, but return man Nate Hanner (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) collected the bounding pigskin.

The Warriors squandered the good field position that resulted from the play when Smith was intercepted by Rob Hauke with a little over three minutes left in the third quarter.

Both defenses played top-notch ball in the fourth quarter with the Warriors surviving three possessions from inside their own 20-yard line. Punter Tim Eskridge (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) relieved the pressure for Lycoming with a 52-yard kick that was downed at the Crusader three-yard line.

Lycoming forced Susquehanna into a three-and-out punting situation and seemed destined for good field position, but an illegal block penalty during Swaneys kicked back the Warriors to their own 47-yard line.

Smith stepped up in the passing game with a pair of completions to receiver Jeremy Ebert (Hawley, Pa./Honesdale) sandwiched in between several effective runs by Laky and running backs Brandon Traugh (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) and John Seese (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg). Monastra capped the effort with his big 27-yard field goal.

Lycoming and Smith captured the game in the first overtime frame with his 11-yard scoring run backed by a four-play stop by the Warriors' defense.
Smith finished with a game high 83-yards rushing and a score while throwing for 116-yards. Laky rushed for 67 yards and a score on 21 carries. Defensive tackle Mike Kozak (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) led the defensive with 13 stops while linebacker Luke Sterling (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) added 11 tackles.

All of Saturday's action will be replayed on television via Suscom Channel 2 twice this week. It is one thing to have a great season, he said, but it is another to be great for a generation. "To have (players) come and go and still maintain that level of excellence is the biggest challenge for a coach," said Lombardi, who built the Great Bay Packers dynasty of the 1960s. "You have to be consistent in your approach, even though every season is different. You have to find a way to make all the pieces fit."

Frank Girardi has made the pieces fit for 27 seasons at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is the first recipient of the Maxwell Football Club's Tri-State Coach of the Year Award, an honor to be presented annually to the area's outstanding college or high school coach.

Girardi has built the Lycoming into a national Division III power. His career record at the school is 202-65-5, a winning percentage of .752. Under his leadership, the Warriors have won 11 Middle Atlantic Conference championships and reached the NCAA Division III playoffs nine times.

In 1998, Girardi's team was 10-1 and finished first in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom League. The Warriors won the overall conference title and earned a fourth consecutive bid to the NCAA tournament. They qualified for the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the national championship game, in 1990 and 1997.

Consistency -- Lombardi's definition of great coaching -- is the hallmark of Girardi's program. He has led Lycoming to 24 consecutive winning seasons. He has won 195 games, lost 47 and tied five in that time for an .800 winning percentage. His teams have lost two or fewer games in 18 of those 24 seasons.

Girardi's career victory total places him fourth among active Division III coaches. His winning percentage ranks eighth. His 202 victories at Lycoming account for almost 80 percent of the school's all-time wins (258).

Girardi's success has earned him MAC Coach of the Year honors 11 times. He was named Eastman-Kodak Region 2 (College Division II) Football Coach of the Year in 1991 when the Warriors finished 10-1. He was chosen AFCA-GTE Region 2 Division III Coach of the Year in 1998.

Girardi was a star running back at Williamsport High School and West Chester University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in education. He broke into coaching in 1961 as an assistant coach at Jersey Shore High School. He was named head coach in 1963 and served in that capacity for six seasons.

Girardi went to Lycoming as an assistant coach in 1969 and three years later, he was promoted to head coach. The Warriors have been on a winning track ever since.
Since 1984, Girardi also has served as Lycoming's Director of Athletics. He oversees the school's 19 intercollegiate programs in addition to coaching the football team. He expanded the sports program, adding women's soccer five years ago and adding men's and women's lacrosse in 1997.

Girardi's wife, Lynne, teaches in the Williamsport Area school system. Their daughter, Justine, graduated from Lycoming in 1966. Three other children -- Cathy, Jerry and Frank, Jr, -- also graduated from the college.

From: Ray Didinger of NFL Films.

Win Number 200 - November 7, 1998

A Special Day for Lycoming Football and Frank Girardi
Annville PA -- There was a crisp wind in the air at kickoff time and for the many Lycoming Warrior football fans who traveled 2 1/2 hours to Lebanon County, it was a special day. How many will see another football coach win 200 at Lycoming?
Scores By Quarter 1 2 3 4 Score Lycoming 14 20 13 0 47 Lebanon Valley 7 0 0 7 14

Injuries Hamper Lebanon Valley -- It did not take long for Lycoming to hit pay dirt as they marched 65 yards on eight plays with the opening possession to score on a Jason Marraccini to Tim Dumas eight yard pass play. The extra point try was good. Lycoming used just 3:45 seconds to score. With just 3:38 second left on the first quarter clock, Brian Thompson grabbed a Marraccini pass for 24 yards and John Shaffer kicked the extra point through the uprights for a 14-0 lead. But Lebanon Valley came to play, even with a number of key injuries that has weakened the squad. Nate Davis caught a Yagmourian pass on a slant pattern over the middle and went for 80 yards as Lycoming's defense was a little flat after their teams two quick scores. That ended the scoring in the first quarter.

Knock out Punch -- The Marraccini lead offense was picking up steam after 10 minutes of back and forth possessions without a score. Jason Marraccini capped off a 9 play drive with a one yard run up the middle. The extra point was missed and Lyco lead 20 to seven. John Scanlan blocked a LVC punt and Lycoming was back on offense at the Lebanon 27. Brian Thompson ran two consecutive plays for 12 and 15 yards to score the Warriors 4th touchdown. Lycoming's two point pass attempt try failed and lead 26-7. On the next series of plays for LVC, Todd Reischer forced a fumble by quarterback Yagmourian which was recovered by Keith Jenkins at the LVC 15 yard line. Lycoming failed to score. Lebanon Valley tried a rush, pass and rush, but the Lyco defense held tight. Mike Venango blocked LVC's punt and recovered on the two yard line. Brian Thompson plunged into the end zone with 17 seconds on the second quarter clock. Jason Marraccini rushed for two point to end the half at Lycoming 34, LVC 7.

Time to Celebrate -- Lycoming took possession from Lebanon Valley at the 12:00 minute mark of the third quarter. LV had 7play for 22 yards and punted the ball to the Lycoming 15 yard line and Jake Maskerines returned the ball 13 yards to the Warrior 28. Nine plays later, capped off by a pass completion from Jason Marraccini to Joe Regenski totaling 27 yards in the air, Lycoming stretched their lead to 40 - after a blocked John Shaffer PAT attempt. Lycoming's last score came at the 55 second mark of the third quarter as Bob Miller rushed 14 yards for the score. John Shaffer's kick went through the uprights for a 47-7 margin in favor of Lycoming. LVC score the final points of the game with a four yard pass completion from Yagmourian to Nate Davis. The extra point was good and the game ended with Lycoming Coach Frank Girardi registering his 200th victory for the Warriors.

Frank Girardi's 200th Win - Set One

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5165750589157958498" style="FLOAT: left; WALLACE New York TimesPublished:
December 2, 1990
Wearing shoes borrowed from Penn State and playing defense like Penn State, the undefeated Warriors of Lycoming College upset previously undefeated Hofstra, 20-10, today and advanced to the final of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III football tournament.

Lycoming, from Williamsport, will play another Pennsylvania college, Allegheny from Meadville, for the championship next Saturday at Bradenton,Fla., in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

Hofstra played the game without Rhory Moss, its regular quarterback. Moss, who had passed for 3,310 yards and 25 touchdowns, was declared ineligible for the contest by the university after an N.C.A.A. official notified Jim Garvey, the athletic director, late Friday afternoon of an alleged violation of N.C.A.A. regulations by Moss.

The nature of the violation was not divulged and Garvey said, in a statement, "The university has decided in the best interests of the integrity of Mr. Moss, his team mates, Hofstra University and the N.C.A.A. tournament to withdraw him from play." Commendable Performance

Tim Lynch, the sophomore who replaced Moss, did a commendable job after a slow start. But his blockers wilted under an assault from the blitzing Lycoming defense and Lynch was sacked six times. He completed 32 of 49 pass attempts for 339 yards but three were intercepted.

Lynch, who had played well on occasion when Moss was hurt, had missed almost six weeks of football because of a virus illness and returned last Tuesday for four days of practice. In the final practice Friday it was Moss who took most of the center snaps.

Joe Gardi, the Hofstra coach, believed the absence of Moss was not the point. He said: "I don't think the outcome had anything to do with the quarterback situation. They outplayed and outcoached us. The better team won."
Hofstra thus lost after 12 straight victories, the most in its football history. Its run-and-shoot offense, which had averged 47 points and almost 500 yards a game, was held to 10 and 359.

Moss, a junior from New York City, was one of a small group of players chosen randomly who took a drug test under N.C.A.A. auspices after last Saturday's quarterfinal tournament game at Trenton State. He saw today's game, mingled with his teammates afterward, but would not comment.

Garvey said that the allegations against Moss would be revealed on Monday and were likely to be appealed by Hofstra.

Frank Girardi, the Lycoming coach going to his first championship game after 23 seasons of coaching the Warriors, 19 as head coach, said he did not care who played quarterback for Hofstra.

"Not even Joe Montana," he said.

The plan was to go after the quarterback, and a defensive end, Joe Emrick, charging from the backside, sacked Lynch three times.

Girardi has had two other teams in the N.C.A.A. playoffs but none ever reached the semifinals before or won 12 games without a defeat. "This team never ceases to surprise me," he said.

His quarterback, Ed Dougherty, came up with a big game as usual. He completed half his passes, 13 of 26, for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns, 10 yards to Paul Hollomon and 37 on a screen pass near the end to the fullback, Anthony Marion.

"That was a great play," said Gardi. "And it came against our all-out blitz."
The Flying Dutchmen had a first down at the Warrior three 14 seconds before halftime but a field goal attempt failed when the holder bobbled the center pass. So the halftime score was 6-3. Hofstra had trailed only once before at the half this season, to Bucknell in its second game.

The Record Year By Year - 1980's

Frank Girardi's Record in the 1980's

1980: 9-1-0
Lycoming 15,
